Coumadin Test $29.-

June 18th, 2009 AnyLabTestNow-Cle 1 comment

Since the Prothrombin time (PT) evaluates the ability of blood to clot properly, it can be used to help diagnose bleeding. When used in this instance, it is often used in conjunction with the PTT to evaluate the function of all coagulation factors. Occasionally, the test may be used to screen patients for any previously undetected bleeding problems prior to surgical procedures.

The International Normalized Ratio (INR) is used to monitor the effectiveness of blood thinning drugs such as warfarin (Coumadin). These anti-coagulant drugs help inhibit the formation of blood clots. They are prescribed on a long-term basis to patients who have experienced recurrent inappropriate blood clotting. This includes those who have had heart attacks, strokes, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Anti-coagulant therapy may also be given as a preventative measure in patients who have artificial heart valves and on a short-term basis to patients who have had surgeries, such as knee replacements. The anti-coagulant drugs must be carefully monitored to maintain a balance between preventing clots and causing excessive bleeding.

TOP FIVE CHOLESTEROL MYTHS

June 13th, 2009 AnyLabTestNow-Cle 2 comments

Myth No. 1: If my total cholesterol and bad (LDL) cholesterol are “normal,” I don’t need to worry about heart disease.

Wrong. Even patients who get their cholesterol test results back as “normal” may be at risk for heart disease. In fact, almost half of all patients who have heart attacks have “normal” cholesterol levels, as measured by the standard cholesterol test. A new, expanded cholesterol test, however, identifies up to twice as many patients at risk of heart disease than the routine cholesterol tests. Like the standard tests, which have been available since the 1970s, the VAP® Test provides total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL, the “good” cholesterol), low-density lipoprotein (LDL, the “bad” cholesterol), and triglycerides. Advanced technology allows the VAP Test to break down these cholesterol components further, providing new information that can help physicians better assess the risk of heart disease in their patients.

Myth No. 2: If I exercise and eat healthy, I don’t need to worry about heart disease.

That’s another fallacy. Many people who are at risk or already suffer from heart disease exercise and eat right. That’s because genetics play a significant role in heart disease. In fact, a recent study of male twins, one lean and athletic and the other heavier and more sedentary, found that the brothers tended to show the same cholesterol response to high-fat and low-fat diets—even though their exercise habits were dramatically different. The study exemplifies the importance of finding out your true risk for heart disease by delving deeper into your cholesterol levels. The VAP Test measures cholesterol subclasses that provide important genetic clues to your overall cardiovascular health.

Myth No. 3: Women aren’t as susceptible to heart disease as men.

This myth couldn’t be further from the truth. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 cause of death in women. In fact, nearly twice as many women in the United States die of heart disease and stroke as from all forms of cancer, including breast cancer. High cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease and also increases the risk of stroke. Women who’ve reached their forties also tend to have higher cholesterol levels than men. In addition, research has shown that low levels of HDL appear to be a stronger risk factor for women than for men. For these reasons, it is especially important for women to have an accurate and detailed cholesterol measurement, such as the one provided by the VAP Test.

Myth No. 4: The routine cholesterol test gives me an accurate measure of my LDL cholesterol.

Wrong again. A little known fact about the routine cholesterol test is that it estimates LDL, rather than directly measuring it. This process can result in a significant under-estimation of a patient’s LDL level—and heart disease risk. The VAP Test directly measures LDL, resulting in an accurate measurement with little or no variation.

Myth No. 5: If my HDL, or “good” cholesterol, is high, I am more protected against heart disease.

This may appear to be true, but there is a catch: HDL is actually made up of HDL2 and HDL3. While people with a higher level of HDL2 are more protected against heart disease, those with more HDL3 actually may be at increased risk for heart disease—even if they have normal total HDL cholesterol. It’s important to be aware of HDL subclass measurements, especially if there’s a history of heart disease in your family. The VAP Test breaks down HDL measurements to accurately assess your cholesterol—and heart disease—risk.

The prothrombin time (PT) to monitor the safety of Coumadin or Warfarin therapy

June 11th, 2009 AnyLabTestNow-Cle No comments

The prothrombin time (PT) to monitor the safety of Coumadin or Warfarin therapy.

Your healthcare provider will determine how often you will need blood tests. Your COUMADIN dosage may be carefully adjusted (raised or lowered) to keep your PT/INR level right for your condition. The results are usually available the same day. When you get these results, ask your healthcare provider if you will need to change your dosage of COUMADIN (Warfarin Sodium).

Fit and apparently healthy, the father of a young family is hit hard by heart disease.

Cholesterol and Heart Attack

AMI KANN
Philip was very high energy and treated me very well, and we had a very good time together. He was always giving me compliments, sending me cards and flowers until I finally told him, um, you don’t have to buy me cards and flowers every – every other day.

ADELE ACK
It was just like the perfect thing to happen. He was so happy. It was just a wonderful match.

AMI KANN
We wanted to start a family, and it happened relatively quick, and we were hoping for a girl.

ADELE ACK
He was so thrilled. And the morning the baby was born he called me and said, it’s a girl! He was so excited.

AMI KANN
The baby was born in April, and in May, we had Philip’s birthday first, and then Philip’s son Justin’s birthday three days later. And, um, we just stayed home that day and played with the baby, and, you know, the baby was only 10 days old. We didn’t really a make big celebration. I thought there was lots of time for those things.

ADELE ACK
I didn’t get to see him. Two days later was Mother’s Day, and I just remember him calling me that night and saying, I love you.

AMI KANN
I woke up to take care of the baby. I think it was probably 400 or 500 in the morning. And Philip, he was snoring very, very loud. Louder than usual, and I couldn’t wake him or budge him. I had tried, because it was actually disturbing me, as exhausted as I was. And I took care of the baby and went back to sleep. And by 930, I tried to wake up Philip and I could not wake him up.

ADELE ACK
I got a call at work from my daughter, and I said, what’s wrong? And she said, don’t ask questions. Just get over to Philip’s.

AMI KANN
The way he looked, and the fact that he wasn’t moving, I–I knew. I knew he was dead.

NARRATOR
Philip Epstein died five days after his 44th birthday.

AMI KANN
I started to question it within a day. You know, what could have gone wrong? He had no health complaints that I know of.

ADELE ACK
He was working out, he was playing a lot of golf, he always was a swimmer. He was able to see Justin three times a week, he never missed. He never seemed to have any problems.

AMI KANN
I never really thought of him as having any health issues, but really he probably had heart disease.

NARRATOR
Philip’s death certificate said he died in his sleep of a massive heart attack. He left behind an infant daughter and a 10-year old son.

JUSTIN EPSTEIN
He was a great dad. He always believed in me. He got me an electric guitar like two days before he died. Said he was going to teach me to play it.

AMI KANN
The fact that the baby was two weeks old, and you know, we had wanted to start a family, and I felt like we didn’t have the chance to – to – to do that. We didn’t have the chance to raise our daughter together.

AMI KANN
You know, I considered this the beginning of our life together. I didn’t know how long we would have, but I certainly never thought that things would change so quickly, that I would have a baby and he’d be gone two weeks later. That was – I can’t ima – it was unimaginable.

Measuring cholesterol alone does not provide the complete picture and can be misleading

The VAP® (Vertical Auto Profile) Test is one of the most accurate and comprehensive cholesterol tests available today. It reports 18 separate components of blood cholesterol compared to just four in a standard test.

This comprehensive cholesterol test can identify more lipid abnormalities (which is the #1 risk factor of heart disease) than the standard test and is the only cholesterol test to identify markers for Metabolic Syndrome, a precursor for diabetes.

Your risk of heart disease and diabetes can be reduced with the right preventative treatments – and the VAP Test provides a large amount of information for your doctor to give an accurate diagnosis.

What is the BT Test?

April 29th, 2009 AnyLabTestNow-Cle 1 comment

What is the BT Test?
The Biomarker Translation Test, or the BT Test, is a blood test that detects and measures the levels of key biomarkers that are associated with breast cancer. A biomarker is a protein found in the blood whose presence can indicate the existence of disease.

Why should I take it?
We recommend all women over the age of 40 get the BT test every year along with their annual screening mammogram.
The two together are a more powerful combination for the early detection of breast cancer than either test alone.

How does it work?
The BT Test® measures a select grouping of well known cancer related proteins in a blood serum sample. Through a thorough analysis, an algorithm creates a BT Score, reflecting the level of probability that breast cancer is present or not.

If I have an abnormal score, does it mean I have breast cancer?
An abnormal score is an indicator of an increased likelihood of having breast cancer.
The actual diagnosis of cancer can only be confirmed by a tissue biopsy with the specimen examined under a microscope for tumor cells
